Meet second year Edith Cowan University Paramedical Science student Pearl who recently completed a two-week WA Centre for Rural Health placement in the Gascoyne. Arriving in Carnarvon, Pearl also had opportunity to travel up to Exmouth and Coral Bay.
What has been the highlight of your rural placement?
The hands-on learning. Things move a bit slower out here, which has given me more time to think through what I’m doing and get more involved. The paramedics I’ve worked with have been so supportive and keen to teach, which has made a huge difference.
What was your most impactful learning moment from your placement?
We had a job far out of town and it really hit me how different rural paramedicine is—no backup close by, limited reception and resources. It was such a good reminder of how much thinking on your feet matters out here.
What is something that has surprised you about Carnarvon?
I was surprised by how peaceful the town can be. I’ve enjoyed being able to walk along the waterfront—it’s become part of my routine to clear my head. The accommodation’s been great too, which has made a big difference. It’s not always easy being away from home, but having some comfort and space to unwind helps a lot.
What advice or tips would you give to fellow students considering a placement in Carnarvon?
Bring things that keep you grounded. If you can, try to organise a car while you’re here. Having one makes it so much easier to get out and explore on your days off, especially with how spread out everything is. The clinical experience is worthwhile, but downtime matters too.
What are the top 3 things you’d recommend to do on a weekend in Carnarvon?
Dinner at the hotel, head to the blowholes and rock pools, check out the local markets.
