Yesterday the Mount Magnet community participated in a ‘Stop the Violence Morning Tea’ at ANZAC Hall to coincide with this week’s 16 Days in WA Stop Violence Against Women campaign.

Organised by the WA Centre for Rural Health, the event attracted over 45 people.

They included staff from Meekatharra’s Mission Australia, the WA Police, Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service, Western Australian Country Health Service, the Nursing Post, Yulella Aboriginal Corporation, Elders Group, Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation, Shire staff and CEO, local businesses and the community.

The Officer in Charge Todd D’Souza from the Mt Magnet Police Station spoke about secondary victimisation.

The community participated in writing pledges to stop violence on against women.

A number of community members wore orange in support of the campaign.

‘It was overwhelming to see how many people got behind the campaign and come together as one to say no to violence,’ said the WA Centre for Rural Health’s Community Development Officer Sophie Leonard who organised the event.

The 16 Days in WA campaign runs from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, until to 10 December, which is Human Rights Day.

The project aims to unite and inspire communities to speak out and stop violence against women.
