The WA Centre for Rural Health of The University of Western Australia has enhanced its interactive online training, Speaking Out Against Disrespect: For community members, designed to build the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to respond to disrespectful behaviour.

Available online and open to all community members, the free course takes approximately one hour to complete and equips participants to become active bystanders who can help create safer, more respectful workplaces and communities.

Developed using the latest evidence-based approaches, the training offers practical, real-world strategies that anyone can use in everyday situations.

Participants will learn how to recognise and respond to disrespect, promote respectful environments, and understand how everyday behaviours can contribute to inequality and family violence.

The course focuses on flexible, personalised responses, allowing individuals to act in ways that feel safe, authentic and effective for them.

Chantal Bachere-Crinquand, Mental Health Nurse Educator and Academic at the WA Centre for Rural Health, said the training empowers people to take meaningful action.

“Disrespect can show up in subtle, everyday ways, but it has real impacts on individuals, workplaces and communities,” Ms Bachere-Crinquand said.

“This course gives people the confidence and practical tools to step in safely and be part of positive cultural change.”

It is suitable for people across all sectors—including professionals, volunteers, leaders and community members—the course supports participants to build awareness, strengthen their response skills and contribute to more respectful communities.

The training is accessible anytime, anywhere, making it easy for individuals and organisations to take part and start making a difference now.
