Senior leaders from The University of Western Australia visited Geraldton last week to strengthen regional partnerships and explore opportunities to advance education, research and workforce development across the Mid West.
UWA Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Colmer and Professor of Practice (Regional and Remote Health) Garry Fitzpatrick visited the WA Centre for Rural Health on 2 to 3 July 2026 as part of UWA’s commitment to its Regional Strategy. Dean and Head of the School of Health and Clinical Sciences Associate Professor Khyber Alam joined the delegation for the second day of stakeholder meetings and discussions.
Hosted by WACRH Director Professor Sandra Thompson, the visit included meetings with regional stakeholders and partner organisations, including the Geraldton Universities Centre, WA Country Health Service, Rural Clinical School, City of Greater Geraldton, Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community (Aboriginal Corporation), Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Mid West Development Commission.
The delegation also met with Kirrilee Warr MLA, Member for Geraldton and Shadow Minister for Local Government and Fisheries, and Hon Sandra Carr MLC, Member for the Legislative Council, to discuss regional priorities, workforce needs and opportunities for future investment in the Mid West.
Discussions focused on strengthening relationships, identifying opportunities for collaboration, progressing regional teaching and workforce development initiatives, supporting rural research, and advocating for infrastructure to meet future regional needs.
Professor Colmer said engagement with regional communities was central to achieving UWA’s vision for Western Australia.
“Regional Western Australia plays a vital role in the State’s future, and visits like this help us better understand local priorities and aspirations,” Professor Colmer said.
“By working closely with WACRH and our regional partners, we can strengthen partnerships that enhance education, research and community engagement opportunities, ensuring UWA’s Regional Strategy delivers meaningful outcomes for regional communities.”
Professor Thompson said the visit provided an important opportunity to discuss the future needs of the region.
“As regional education and research continue to expand, it is important that we plan for the infrastructure required to support future growth,” Professor Thompson said.
“Strong partnerships between UWA, WACRH and regional stakeholders will help ensure the Mid West remains a leading location for regional education, research and workforce development.”
The visit reflects a shared commitment to creating opportunities that benefit regional communities and support a strong future for the Mid West.
